The château, Collioure’s historic millefeuille

The Counts of Roussillon and the Kings of Aragon were behind the development of the Château Royal. Between 1276 and 1344, the Château Royal was used as a summer residence by the court of the Kings of Majorca, who helped to renovate the castle. In 1642, France and Spain began a historic battle that would change the history of Collioure. In 1659, at the time of the Treaty of the Pyrenees, Collioure became French !

In the 17th century, Vauban built the outer wall, razed the village within the ramparts and designed the glacis (now a car park). In 1939, the château became a prison. Its first occupants were Spanish Republicans who had been exiled.
