The mill was built in the 14th century to grind grain into flour, and is most likely the oldest grain mill in Roussillon.
It ceased activity in the 19th century, and over time, the building degraded until only ruins were left. The municipality began restoration works, which were completed in June 2001.
Today, the olives are harvested in Collioure, then sent to Millas for pressing, and finally bottled in Collioure.
A bit of history !
The oldest windmill in the region, the Collioure mill was built in the 14th century.
On 11 February 1337, Chevalier Raymond de Toulouse, the King of Majorca’s procurator, granted Jacques Ermengald de Collioure permission to use the building to grind grain. As the centuries went by, the Cortina mill was gradually abandoned, until at the dawn of the 20th century it looked like a field of ruins.
The mill today
Having become the property of the town, the municipality undertook its restoration, which was completed in June 2001. The wooden machinery was built in the traditional way by Bernard Garibald’s carpenters. The Collioure mill was originally designed to grind grain, but this is no longer the case, as it is now used to produce olive oil. Although it is still in working order to crush olives and produce Collioure oil, the latter is done in Millas. The olives are harvested in Collioure, then sent to Millas for pressing and finally bottled in Collioure.
