The Antonio Machado memorial, a new place to discover!
Located in the grounds of the Hotel Quintana where he was welcomed on his arrival in Collioure, close to the cemetery where he is buried today, the memorial retraces the poet's last days. From his arrival at Collioure railway station until his death on 22 February 1939, many people lavished care and attention on him and showed him admiration and esteem. His tragic fate has since become a symbol and his grave an important place of remembrance.
In addition to his grave, the town of Collioure felt it necessary to fill a void in its memory. This place, humble in its scale and sober in its scenography, now fills the gap. A trilingual educational trail tells the story of Machado's last journey and leads us to a space dedicated to meditation, in front of the reconstruction of the room where he died.
The Antonio Machado memorial has the simple ambition of bringing the poet back to life, retracing his exile, honouring the symbol and, ultimately, keeping the flame of poetry alive.
Set up in the grounds of the Hotel Quintana, where the poet was welcomed on his arrival in Collioure, and close to the cemetery where he is buried today, the space retraces Machado's last days.
