- Symbol of the town
- Currently under renovation, only open for service on Wednesday and Sunday mornings
Located just off the Boramar beach, Notre Dame des Anges is one of the town's main symbols. Its bell tower was built on the base of a lighthouse, giving it a special charm.
The building has undergone a number of changes that mark its originality: first it was a lighthouse, then the bell tower was added and finally the dome in 1810. Its architectural style is reminiscent of southern Gothic.
Its foundations in the Mediterranean make it an exceptional building. Its bell tower, built throughout the Middle Ages, its Catalan Baroque altarpiece covered in gold leaf, and the altarpieces that surround it, make it a remarkable site. Built and attached to the bell tower in 1684, it wasn't until 1810 that the dome was added, giving it its definitive appearance.
A little history…
Originally, the town's first church, named Sainte-Marie, stood on the site of the original town, within the walls of the Château Royal. During Vauban's reorganisation of the town, the church was demolished to make way for the Glacis. Louis XIV, wishing to conciliate the population, donated the land needed to build a new church.
